Untried until a September 3YO and then with eight starts that season, OWN SWEET WAY (NZ) produced two seconds and two thirds between 1200-2000m and two fourths over 2400m in ground from good, soft and heavy. After a short in-stable let up, the now 4YO gelding today again showed his first-up propensity by claiming his maiden win on home track Ballarat over 1400m. Under Damien Oliver’s masterful ride from the widest of 13 gates, the gelding responded perfectly to Damien’s decision to push on, and crossed to the fence after 500m. Challengers were all around, and in the straight, under urgent riding, he held them off for a tenacious half-neck win.

“Matt’s done a great job with him – ready to go first up and lead,” said Damien. “Beautiful ride from Ollie . . . showed the jockey’s skills,” said Matt.

The stable will feel its way forward for this son of Iffraaj (GB) from the Redoute’s Choice mare Exquisite Choice, purchased by Matt and McKeever Bloodstock from the 2016 Karaka Select Yearling Sales. With the sprinting blood of Snippets in his second dam he may not be a true stayer; perhaps better suited to the middle distances enjoyed by his stakes-winning three-quarter brother, Riding Shotgun. Sure to be more fun in store for OWN SWEET WAY’s enthusiastic band of owners.
