Owner-breeder Dr Rod Stobart was trackside today to cheer home INALA MAX, ridden flawlessly by Dean Holland for his GP. This was the 5yo gelding’s second win in 12 starts and came six weeks after thrashing a maiden field by 3.25L over 2000m at Werribee. In between, “Max” stepped up to 2400m at Geelong – running unplaced after laying in. In today’s contest over 2200m new gear was applied, a one-eyed blinker nearside. Yet it was evident by the horse’s head being turned out slightly the entire way that this was not a complete panacea. Dean had to keep the offside rein a little shorter, even while rounding the home turn, so full marks to him for a finely balanced, patient and perfectly timed ride.

Victories always seem tastier when you’re the 20-1 pop that narrowly beats an odds-on favourite carrying 5kg less weight!
