Morphettville, on the first Saturday in March – officially autumn, South Australia’s heatwave endured along with Victoria’s. The temperature, a scorching 40 degrees, was cause for nine scratchings that reduced the field to seven runners for the $100,000 Cinderella Stakes, a Listed Race for 2YO fillies at set weights over 1050m. Nevertheless the quality was there, including a half-sister to the stallions Star Witness and Nostradamus. Five crossed the border from Victoria.

The stable knew LADY NATURALISTE was a good traveller and seasoned even at this young age. She’s as tough as she is talented and good-looking. She’d begun her career with a sizzling second at Moonee Valley (second x0.3L to the abovementioned Lady Lupino); then super performances at Flemington, Sandown, Warwick Farm (for the inaugural $2 million Inglis Millennium against some now proven very smart colts), and now to Morphettville.

Raquel Clark, in her first ride on this filly by Choisir from Tale of the Cat mare Calcatta, did a brilliant job. Until the scratchings came, it was unforeseen we’d be coming from the inside barrier and, local knowledge or not, Raquel skilfully kept to the rail until straightening for the run home when runners outside her had begun to charge for home. LADY NATURALISTE responded with a level head to switch out, find the gap and glide away to victory.

Purchased for $150,000 at the 2018 Inglis Easter Yearling sale by P. Diamond/Boomer Bloodstock/Cumani Racing, Matt has always adored this filly. Her dam Calcatta won the SAJC Dequetteville Stakes (L); and her dam (by Commands) had six wins 1000-1400m including three at Listed level in Queensland.  The stable thanks the Diamond family and their co-owners Mark Goldberg, Chris Judd and Gary Sweet for believing in our way of training their fabulous filly. The ride is only just beginning …
